Air Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) - Theory & Examinations

After you have earned your PPL and flown more solo flights to gain confidence and experience, your thoughts should turn towards the ATPL theoretical knowledge examinations.

Entry Requirements:

  • A Private Pilot’s Licence issued in accordance with ICAO Annex 1A.

  • Sound knowledge of basic mathematics and physics.

  • Be competent in the use of the English language.

There are 14 exams which cover the following topics:

2. Meteorology

3. Aircraft Knowledge General (AGK)

4. Performance

5. General navigation

6. Radio navigation

7. Instrumentation

8. VFR Communications

9. IFR Communications

10. Air Law

11. Operational Procedures

12. Flight Planning and Monitoring

13. Mass and Balance

14. Human Performance and Limitations

PAFT do not offer courses for the theoretical knowledge subjects needed to pass the ATPL examinations, because we think you will want to study online, around employment or educational commitments. We recommend that an online course, like that offered by the long established Bristol Groundschool (BGS), is the most economic way to study.
