Competency Based Instrument Rating (CBIR) - Single Engine

Course length

6-8 Weeks

Course Content

Modular Competency Based Instrument Rating – Aeroplanes (CB IR(A))

                                                                                Introduction

The aim of the CB IR modular course, is to train PPL or CPL holders for their Instrument Rating, whist allowing for any relevant instrument flight experience, they may already have.

The training is intended, to allow the candidate to reach the level of proficiency needed to operate aeroplanes under Instrument Flight Rules and in Instrument Meteorological Conditions. Put simply, to navigate by the use of instruments alone, in cloud or conditions of bad visibility by day and night.

The course involves 40 hours training for a single engine CB IR and 45 hours for a multi engine CB IR.

PAFT Courses to obtain a CB IR

PAFT Recommendation - In the present pilot job market, PAFT recommends that the training should be conducted in two parts:

1. Instrument Rating (Restricted) (IR(R)) Course

  • 15 hours dual instruction in a Piper Warrior aircraft OR

  • 15 hours dual instruction in a DA 40 (10 hours aircraft / 5 hours simulator)

This training gives the candidate instrument flying experience mentioned in the introduction. This is followed by:

2. CBIR(A) Single Engine Course

  • 25 hours dual instruction in a DA 40 aircraft OR

  • 25 hours dual instruction in a DA 40 simulator and aircraft

Total Instrument Training Hours 40. The IR test may now be taken, subject to the theoretical knowledge requirements below having been met.

We recommend you pause your training at this point and consider the pilot job market. If the market is good, convert your Single Engine IR into a Multi engine IR as described below, because to work as a commercial pilot, a multi-engine rating and instrument rating are required to be employed by an airline or other air operator.

However, because the cost of keeping a multi-engine rating and IR valid is much higher than in a single - and you need to renew it annually - you may wish to continue with your single engine IR only.

Multi-Engine Rating and Instrument Rating Conversion

6 hours training on a multi-engine piston aircraft plus 5 hours multi-engine piston IR training will allow you to apply to upgrade your single engine CPL/CB(IR) privileges to a CPL with Multi-Engine IR privileges. This can be done in just a month.

Multi-Engine Rating Instrument Rating as an alternative to SE IR

A multi-engine CBIR(A) course shall include at least 45 hours instrument time under instruction, of which up to 30 hours may be in an appropriate simulator.

The flying training shall include at least 10 hours of instrument flight time, under instruction in a multi-engine aeroplane at an ATO. The total amount of dual instrument instruction must not be less than 25 hours, of which at least 15 hours shall be completed in a multi-engine aeroplane.

Pre-training Requirements for the CB IR

(a) You must be the holder of a PPL(A) or CPL(A) including an appropriate medical certificate. Class 1 is needed for a commercial pilot.

(b) Have completed at least 80 hours of theoretical knowledge instruction to the IR(A) knowledge level at an ATO. The course of theoretical knowledge instruction shall be completed within 18 months. This is not required if the trainee has passed the ATPL theoretical knowledge examinations.

(c) The instrument flight instruction and the IR(A) skill test shall be completed within the period of validity (36 months) of the pass of the theoretical knowledge examinations.

(d) To determine the number of hours credited and to establish the training required, the candidate has to complete a pre-entry assessment.

Theoretical Knowledge Training

An approved competency-based modular IR(A) course shall comprise at least 80 hours of theoretical knowledge instruction for the CB IR. The theoretical knowledge course may contain computer-based training and e-learning elements. This training is covered by passing the ATPL theory examinations – see ATPL Theory

What's Included

  • 25 Hours PA28

  • Home approach and landing fees

  • Course notes & checklist

  • Ground briefings

What's Not Included

  • Skills test fee

  • Solo aircraft hire for test

  • CAA IR issue fee

  • You should allow approx. £200 for approach and away landing fees. This is subject to the actual number and type of approaches flown

  • The minimum duration of the course is instrument time under instruction as specified in CAP 804 Section 4 Part L Page 33. As such this can not include any taxing time in the aircraft. It is likely that your course will incur an additional expense equivalent to an approximate duration of 3.0 hours for taxi time during the aircraft phase of training

Pre Course Requirements

  • Have passed the ATPL(A), or IR(A) theoretical knowledge examinations

  • Hold a Night Rating (to exercise IR privileges at night)

  • Have completed at least 50-hours of cross-country flight time as pilot-in-command (PIC)

  • Hold a valid Class 1 or 2 medical certificate

  • Hold a valid Private Pilot Licence (PPL) or Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL)
